A new endemic subspecies of Salicornia procumbens (Chenopodiaceae) from Sardinia (Italy). Salicornia procumbens subsp. ichnusae subsp. nov.

Salicornia represents one of the taxonomically most problematic angiosperm taxa due to the reduced morphology of the plants. The most recently revised classification of Eurasian taxa for this genus is based both on molecular and morphological characters as well as the geographical distribution (Kadereit et al. 2012). The aim of the present research is to investigate the populations of the Sardinian island, , for which no molecular data are available until now, in relationship with the Venetian (North Adriatic) ones by both morphological and molecular approaches. The obtained data evidenced that Venetian and Sardinian populations formed two well distinct groups and led to the description of a new subspecies of Salicornia procumbens for the Sardinian populations.
