Is Code All That Matters? Investigating How Technical Documentation Quality Affects Developer Experience

Developer Experience (DX) is influenced by how developers consult information during the software develop-ment process. External documentation, such as APIs (Application Programming Interface) and frameworks, sup-ports the use and learning of technologies. Despite its importance, scientific literature lacks extensive studies onhow technical documentation affects DX. Therefore, we conducted a grey literature review to understand docu-mentation quality factors and how they affect DX. From the analyzed sources, we selected 38 for data extractionand identified 20 quality factors. This study contributes to the field and enables researchers and practitioners tounderstand how to improve DX during interaction with technical documentation.
