UZBEK AND RUSSIAN TOPONYMIC LEGENDS: A TYPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

Toponymic legends represent an important layer of oral folklore that reflects the historical memory, worldview, and cultural identity of a people. This thesis explores the typological similarities and differences between Uzbek and Russian toponymic legends, focusing on their narrative structures, symbolic meanings, and socio-cultural functions. Through comparative analysis, the study reveals that both traditions connect geographical names with historical events, legendary figures, and mythological motifs. However, each culture demonstrates distinctive features shaped by its historical experience, environment, and belief systems. The research highlights the role of toponymic legends in preserving collective memory and strengthening national identity within oral tradition.
