Food Growing Spaces

Dataset maintained by DDPHE/SSBO, on behalf of Food in Communities. Data steward: Jessika Brenin ([e-mail]). This dataset shows locations of food growing spaces across Denver to provide users with knowledge about and support analysis of the local food producing landscape. Data was compiled from partners (Denver Urban Gardens, Grow Local Colorado, SustainED, Healthy Food for Denver's Kids, Denver Public Schools, Mile High Farmers, Uproot CO, Commun, Mo'Betta Green, Lost Greens Farm). Location and attribute fields were standardized. Duplications were removed. Site information was validated as much as possible. Food Growing Spaces are defined with the following categories: Gardens (Agricultural land producing food for use by a single entity.) Public Community Garden: spaces producing food that is split into plots, with individual plot ""owners"" independently tending to and benefiting from their plot(s). Anyone can become a plot owner. Organizational Garden: spaces producing food for direct use only by one organization and its clients. School Garden (a specific type of Organizational Garden): spaces at a school producing food for direct use within that school's cafeteria, for distribution to families at that school, or for educational purposes of students at that school. May be indoor or outdoor food growing spaces. Farm: spaces producing food for sale or donation to many individuals, households, or organizations through on-site or off-site distribution channels. May be indoor or outdoor food growing spaces. Food Forest: Food-producing land in the form of a forest ecosystem; often with a multi-layered, perennial, permaculture design; often for use by and accessible to the public. Retention policy: Retained as long as data remains relevant for food systems planning and analysis.
