资源简介:

Ellipsis is a fundamental syntactic and pragmatic phenomenon whereby elements recoverable from context are omitted from an utterance, thereby enhancing economy of expression and stylistic elegance. This article examines the nature, classification, and communicative functions of elliptical sentences across spoken and written registers of English. Drawing on insights from generative grammar, functional linguistics, and discourse analysis, the study investigates how ellipsis operates as a cohesive device that reduces redundancy, sustains conversational flow, and sharpens rhetorical impact. Through corpus-based analysis of authentic spoken dialogues, academic prose, literary fiction, and journalistic texts, the article demonstrates that ellipsis is not merely an optional stylistic shortcut but a principled grammatical operation governed by strict recoverability and licensing conditions. The findings highlight practical strategies for language learners, teachers, writers, and communicators to deploy elliptical structures effectively and appropriately in diverse communicative contexts. Recommendations for pedagogical integration are also provided.
