Advancing Military Medicine Education: Curriculum Integration and Practical Training at the Defence Services Medical Academy

<b>Abstract</b><br><b>Introduction:</b> This study examines the integration of military medicine education at the Defence Services Medical Academy (DSMA), assessing the curriculum’s structure, practical training adequacy, and its relevance to the evolving needs of both military and civilian healthcare sectors.<br>Despite the comprehensive nature of DSMA’s curriculum, there are significant gaps in practical training and its continuity, which hinder the academy’s ability to effectively prepare students for the complexities of modern military medicine.<b>Methods:</b> A qualitative approach was employed, consisting of focused group discussions (FGDs) with six students and six faculty members. Data were analyzed using MAXQDA 24 to identify recurring themes related to curriculum content, instructional methods, and the effectiveness of practical training in military medicine.<b>Results:</b> The findings reveal that while DSMA offers a broad curriculum, practical training and its real-world application are insufficient. Key recommendations include revising the curriculum to include modern warfare medicine, expanding hands-on training experiences, and incorporating innovative teaching methods such as mobile training platforms. Additional strategies include using high-fidelity simulations, restructuring the curriculum to enhance its relevance, and establishing a dedicated department for military medicine.<b>Conclusion:</b> This research identifies critical gaps in DSMA’s curriculum, particularly in practical training, that need to be addressed to better prepare graduates for contemporary military and civilian healthcare demands. Implementing the recommended improvements will ensure that DSMA graduates are equipped to meet modern healthcare challenges and maintain the academy’s leadership in military medical education.
