VPRS 17129 Metropolitan General Cemetery Records

From a brief perusal of the records it would appear that the City council and other suburban councils saw the need in the 1870s for more land to be set aside for use as a cemetery. Public and inter-council meetings were held to lobby the government and draft legislation to this effect. The Metropolitan General Cemetery Trust was set up to work toward this end. Land at Frankston was identified as the preferred site.The Town Clerk of the City of Melbourne, Mr Fitzgibbon, was nominated as secretary for the meetings and acted as honorary secretary to the Trust.The Trust was wound up in July 1906.It is through the secretarial role of the Town Clerk that records were in the custody of the City of Melbourne.
