Attitudes to the political system. Topics: moral orientation and
important things in life (scale); election participation at the last
Federal Parliament election; behavior at the polls (second vote);
interest in politics; sympathy scale for the parties; postmaterialism;
satisfaction with social security, democracy and the market economy in
the Federal Republic; potential and actual political participation;
contact with authorities; judgement on conduct of workers in government
offices; trust in political institutions, public facilities,
organizations, associations and media; perceived equal treatment and
respect from authorities in general as well as the police in
particular; most important problems in the FRG; conventional political
participation (scale); frequency of reading newspapers and use of news
broadcasts on television; self-classification on a left-right
continuum; attitude to democracy as conception of a state and to
socialism as idea; attitude regarding democratic elements of society,
such as e.g. freedom of speech, the right to strike, opposition and
conflict solutions; fair share of national product; political
effectiveness (political efficacy); responsibility of the state for
price stability, provision for old age, economic growth and
unemployment benefit; preferred increase in expenditures of the
government for environmental protection, criminal prosecution, pensions
or unemployment benefit; attitude regarding life and society (scale);
memberships in trade union, occupation organization, employer
association or clubs; employment in the civil service; living together
with a partner; religiousness; party preference (Sunday question);
party inclination; possession of a telephone. In the eastern part the
following additional question was posed: preference for a Western party
before the turning point. Interviewer rating: presence of third persons
during interview and their intervention in the course of the survey;
willingness of respondent to cooperate; reliability of respondent;
length of interview; date of interview.
