Pampulha Lake is a hypereutrophic urban lake, with long term algal bloom events, frequently showing dominance shifts especially between Nostocales, Chroococcales and Oscillatoriales populations. One of the most relevant populations in the lake is Raphidiopsis (=Cylindrospermopsis) raciborskii, a cyanobacterium with worldwide distribution but with distinct biogeographical features related to its ability to produce different toxins.
