Greenhouse gas emissions from road transportation in the EU 1990-2022

Road transportation in the European Union (EU-27) produced the equivalent of 764 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂e) in 2022. Two year earlier, EU road transportation emissions plummeted by more than 12 percent, owing to COVID-19-related travel restrictions. However, emissions have rebounded since then. Nevertheless, they remained below pre-pandemic levels in 2022. Overall, annual EU road transportation emissions have risen by almost 25 percent since 1990.
