Penicillia are an important class of fungi that are efficient producers of cellulase, and there have been several studies which demonstrated the potential of this fungus in production of biomass degrading enzymes.Studies performed earlier at the Centre for Biofuels (CBF), CSIR-NIIST had demonstrated the potential of Penicillium janthinellum NCIM1366 as an efficient producer of cellulases and it contains higher levels of the rate limiting enzyme- beta glucosidase and hemicelluloses degrading enzyme-xylanase. Genome sequencing and analysis study will build a reference database on the genes of carbohydrate activated enzymes (CAZymes) involved in lignocellulosic biomass degradation in this organism.
