资源简介:
Globalisation and European integration are said to have divided people into ‘winners and losers’, but little research exists on whether this expected causation has had any influence on public support for EU membership. Further, the existing literature almost exclusively hypothesises and investigates homogenous effects across countries and citizens. This article argues that increasing inequality could have had a divergent effect across countries and citizens. A multilevel model across 28 EU member states from 2007-2017 confirms this expectation, showing that left-wing citizens have become significantly less supportive of EU membership as inequality has increased. Right-wing citizens, on the other hand, have become more supportive. Further, this polarising effect has been more significant in countries that were originally more equal. The results have theoretical and methodological implications for future studies of public opinion, as they suggest that future research should focus more on potential divergent effects of contextual developments on public opinion.
