Raw data of protection assay conducted on Drosophila simulans with Leptopolina heterotoma. Drosophila melanogaster naturally infected with Spiroplasma MSRO were used as a control.

Description of data: The dataset contains a record of the number of adult flies and wasps that emerged following parasitoid wasp attack. D. melanogaster naturally infected with Spiroplasma MSRO were used as a positive control. Data is in xlsl format.

Description of methods for data collection: F2 generation D. melanogaster larvae were exposed to L. heterotoma wasps, following artificial infection with Spiroplasma, Hy1. Six treatments were established: transinfected larvae with and without wasps (S+ Lh+, S+ Lh-), uninfected controls with and without wasps (S- Lh+, S- Lh-) and a positive control naturally infected D. melanogaster with and without wasps (MSRO Lh+, MSRO Lh-). For each treatment 10 replicate vials were established, each containing 15 first and second instar Drosophila larvae. The wasps were permitted to attack larvae for 3 days at 25°C under a 12 h:12 h light:dark cycle. The number of fly pupae, eclosed adult flies and the number of eclosed wasps were counted for each vial.

Column headings:
Column A- wasp: presence (Lh+) or absence of (Lh-) of L. heterotoma wasps.
Column B- species: species of Drosophila. D. simulans was artificially infected with Spiroplasma Hy1. D. melanogaster naturally infected with Spiroplasma MSRO was used as a control.
Column C- line: replicate line of transinfected flies.
Column D- infection_status: presence or absence of Spiroplasma in Drosophila larvae. Infection derived from artificial transinfecton (S+), uninfected control (S-) and Drosophila naturally infected with Spiroplasma MSRO strain (MSRO).
Column E- larvae: number of larvae placed onto the surface of Drosophila food.
Column F- pupae: number of pupae that developed in each vial
Column G- fly: number of adult flies that emerged from fly pupae
Column H- no_fly: number of adult flies that did not emerge from fly pupae
Column I- wasp: number of adult wasps that emerged from fly pupae
Column J- no_wasp: number of adult wasps that did not emerge from fly pupae
Column K- wasp_survival: proportion of adult wasps that emerged from fly pupae
Column L- fly_survival: proportion of adult flies that emerged from fly pupae
