The samples comprising this dataset were primarily collected between 2013 and 2019, with sporadic fluvial sediment samples acquired from 2001 to 2013. The dataset contains sampling location information for 40 main stem samples and 107 tributary samples, clastic component data for 62 fluvial sediment samples, heavy mineral data for 145 fluvial sediment samples, and geochemical data for 55 fluvial sediment samples.
Clastic components were counted using the Gazzi-Dickinson method, with selected particle size fractions ranging from 63 to 2000 μm. Heavy minerals were extracted from sediments with particle sizes of 32–500 μm using a heavy liquid (2.90 g/cm³) and liquid nitrogen cooling method, and each heavy mineral component was identified and quantified with the assistance of optical properties and Raman spectroscopy. Geochemical tests were conducted on sandy sediments with particle sizes <2000 μm.
The clastic component and heavy mineral component analyses were performed in the laboratories of the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy) and Nanjing University, respectively, while the geochemical data were generated by the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. All analytical results are reliable and authentic.
This dataset systematically documents sediment components from different tributaries and tectonic units (e.g., Tethyan Himalaya Terrane, Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone, Lhasa Terrane) within the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin. It enables clarification of the distribution characteristics of sediment components derived from different lithologies or rivers in the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin of southern Tibet, providing a reference for provenance analysis and correlation in deep time. Additionally, combined with forward mixing model calculations, it is determined that sandy sediments in the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin are mainly sourced from the northern Lhasa Terrane, which contributes approximately 80% of the basin's sandy sediments—five times the contribution of the southern Tethyan Himalaya Terrane—while the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone provides less than 5% of the sandy sediments.
