Arcella species host living bacteria in their cytoplasm (Török et al. 2008). Clonal cultures of different Arcella species were investigated for the presence of endocytobionts using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Majority of them belong to different Proteobacteria subgroups. Since the beginning of our studies in 2006, more than 15 prokaryotic genera and numerous species referred to as „uncultured” have been identified by molecular phylogenetic methods. Host organisms, Arcella species were investigated either as lab clones or specimens from environmental samples.
