Rate of involuntary psychiatric hospital admissions in Belgium 2000-2016, by region

From 2000 to 2016, the overall rate of involuntary committals increased in Belgium. However, such rates varied greatly from one region to another. Indeed, the rates of forced admission in psychiatric hospitals located in Brussels-Capital were significantly higher than in Flanders or Wallonia. In Belgium, forced admissions in psychiatric hospitals are subject to strict conditions. Forced admission can be applied during a psychic episode where the patient is considered to be a danger for himself or society. On the other hand, involuntary admissions can also reveal a mental health system that can't provide alternative care methods to more complex patients.
