Raw Automatic Identification System (AIS) Data and Vessel Metadata from the MAGI Platform

Overview: This dataset, collected using the MAGI System, provides a rich, integrated source of Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking data and static vessel characteristics (metadata). It is specifically designed to support advanced research in maritime traffic analysis, vessel performance modeling, and, critically, the calculation of vessel emissions (CO2, NOx, SOx). Scope and Data Collection: The data collection was focused on the interoceanic route of the Panama Canal—a key global chokepoint—to capture highly dynamic traffic patterns. Geographical Area: Panama Canal, encompassing the interoceanic route and approach zones (e.g., Balboa and Cristóbal anchorages). Time Period: Data was collected during a dedicated 10-day campaign in April 2025. Data Content: The dataset combines two primary types of information, provided in CSV format for ease of use: Dynamic AIS Messages: Time-stamped positional and kinematic data essential for emissions modeling, including Longitude, Latitude, Navigational Status (Under way using engine, At anchor, etc.), Speed Over Ground (SOG), and Course/Heading. Static Vessel Characteristics (Metadata): Permanent details crucial for calculating engine loads and fuel consumption, including IMO and MMSI numbers, Ship Type (e.g., Cargo, Hazardous category A), Built Year, Gross Tonnage (GT), Length Overall, Breadth, Propulsion details (Engine Type and Rated Power in kW), and Static Speed. Intended Use: Researchers can utilize the high-resolution, time-matched kinematic and static data to: Apply the IMO methodology (MEPC.2/Circ.18) or similar load-power curves for emissions estimation. Analyze vessel behavior and speed profiles within a congested shipping environment. Develop new models for predicting fuel consumption and environmental impact.
