Effects of culture media and oxygen levels on cancer cell transcriptome

The concepts of physioxia and physiological media for mammalian cell culture have gained attention over the past several years. While recent works have explored specific aspects of how individual microenvironmental factors, such as oxygen levels or medium composition, affect specific cellular processes, their large-scale effects remain incompletely understood. Here we have taken a transcriptomic approach to identify the broad effects of standard cell culture O2 (18 kPa) versus physioxia (5 kPa) and of a common (DMEM) versus physiological medium (Plasmax) on MCF7 breast cancer cells.
