This research project is centered on the isolation and characterizations of novel bacterial strains that can de-toxify toxic organic chemicals, tolerate heavy metal-induced stress and, produce commercially important pigments. Whole genome sequencing of the above stated strains can lead to the identification of novel genes which have potential applications in environmental bioremediation, drug development and commercial production of important carotenoids, pyomelanin and other important bacterial pigments. Comparative bioinfomatic analyses of the genes of unknown functions and the well characterized genes/operons, in conjunction with available gene expression data can assign functional roles to genes without known functions and connect these genes in specific physiological pathways. The output from the in silico analyses can have applications in basic research in microbiology especially in the field of of synthetic biology.
