Hawaiian Longhorn Beetles (Cerambycidae)

Like most groups of insects in Hawai'i, the Longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) includes a mix of endemic and introduced species. Among the endemics is the entire genus Plagithmysus (pictured in the cover for this expedition), which includes several species that feed on various parts of koa trees. Unlike non-native species, Plagithmysus have evolved with koa and do not pose a threat to forests. In fact, they may be vital for the health of native forests. There are a number of pest species among the Longhorn beetles so it's an important group to keep tabs on.
