Astrephomene is a volvocine alga (Chlorophyta) which has evolved multicellular traits such as 3D body plan (spheroidal colony), germ-soma differentiation and expanded extracellular matrix independently of volvocacean species. In order to reveal the differences in gene expression patterns between somatic and reproductive cells in this alga, RNA-seq analysis of separated somatic and reproductive cells in Astrephomene gubernaculifera were constructed.
