During the earthquake process, the dynamic energy balance is crucial for understanding the earthquake. In theoretical models, the macroscopic dynamic energy balance can be linked to the microscopic processes near the crack tip or on the frictional interface, which results in the fault surface morphological structures. Thus the fault surface morphology and the dynamic energy balance in earthquakes can be quantitatively linked in theoretical predictions. Our experiments prove the predictions and show that the strain rate has crucial influence on the dynamic energy balance.
