Mixotricha paradoxa is a large, cellulolytic flagellate present in the hindgut of the lower termite Mastotermes darwiniensis. Mi. paradoxa possesses only four flagella used primarily for steering. Its movement is instead driven by the coordinated undulatory motion of ectosymbiotic spirochetes. Additionally, Bacteroidales bacteria coexist with these spirochetes on specialized surface structures, while Endomicrobiales bacteria are present within the cytoplasm. This study presents draft or complete genome sequences for three primary symbiotic phylotypes associated with Mi. paradoxa. Additionally, we obtained the transcriptome of Mi. paradoxa. Based on these data, we predicted metabolic pathways for each microorganism and proposed potential symbiotic interactions among them.
