资源简介:
Brockington and Associates, Inc. undertook archaeological data recovery
investigations at 38BU1294 in August 1995. This site occupies approximately 2.2 acres on the western edge of Cane Island along the eastern bank of the Beaufort River. Survey and testing conducted at 38BU1294 in 1992 revealed two intact occupation middens containing a diverse and dense artifact assemblage dating to the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century (Espenshade and Kennedy 1992:53). Data recovery excavations concentrated on areas of greatest midden content, faunal preservation, and likelihood of structural remains.
Excavations identified four features: two refuse areas and two post holes. The refuse areas and one post hole were associated with an eighteenth/early nineteenth century slave occupation. The second post pit represented a Late Archaic/Woodland component.
