William James Farrer was a wheat breeder and public servant. Farrer carried on an extensive correspondence with agricultural scientists and responsible wheat growers both overseas and throughout Australia. He discussed the methods and progress of his experiments, concerning the problem of wheat rust and the improvement of the milling qualities and nutritive value of wheat as well as exchanging numerous wheat samples with his correspondents.The series comprises papers relating to Farrer's research including: letters received by Farrer from Henry Vilmorin, a French grain merchant and experimentalist, M.A. Carleton and B.T. Galloway of the United States Department of Agriculture, Professor A.E. Blount of the State Agricultural College Colorado and C.E. Saunders of the Department of Agriculture, Canada (together with typed copies of all these in-letters); a volume of typed copies of letters sent by Farrer to B.T. Galloway and M.A. Carleton; an incomplete letter sent by Farrer to Dr N.A. Cobb, plant pathologist of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture and three invoices from Vilmorin-Andrieux and Company, France, to Farrer for wheat samples.
