Edelman believes that humanity is about to experience the single largest intellectual revolution in human history. He has three sub-themes: what we can learn from and what we must know to attack the human problems of drug addiction, psychoses, and neurological diseases; whether the mind is similar to a computer; and that what makes us human is our consciousness. He offers a description of how neurons function and also argues that human brains are not like computers, but that the brain is more of a Darwinian system, evolutionary.
