Life Cycle Assessment of Alternative Drives - Electric Vehicles in Comparison

The use of alternative propulsion systems and biogenic fuels is becoming increasingly important due to the increasing environmental impact of conventional, fossil-fuelled motor vehicles. The report examines greenhouse gas and air pollutant balances of electric vehicles and other alternative forms of propulsion in order to assess their potential in comparison to conventional propulsion systems and also in comparison to biofuels. The results form a sound basis for the comprehensive accounting of conventional and alternative drive and energy supply options. In almost all of the categories considered, pure electric vehicles perform best in terms of drive concepts. With renewable electricity as an energy source, this effect can be significantly increased.
