3BTRON: A Blood-Brain Barrier Recognition Network - Dataset

Electron microscopy images were obtained from C57Bl/6J mice. Animal experiments were conducted in accordance with the national and institutional guidelines ([Scientific Procedures Act] 1986 (UK), and the Council Directive 2010/63EU of the European Parliament and the Council of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes) and had a full Home Office ethical approval. Mice were housed with no restrictions to food and water in a 12-hours light/dark cycle. The age of the mice was recorded at the time they were culled.

Images were taken from 23 mice - 11 female (5 aged, 6 young), 12 male (6 aged, 6 young) - across three different brain regions: the corpus callosum (labelled CC), the hippocampus (labelled HC), and the prefrontal cortex (labelled PFC). We also include an additional dataset of images from the brains of 3 middle-age female mice taken from the corpus callosum and prefrontal cortex.

A small number of images were of the same vessel taken using different magnifications, positioning or contrast. As such, one image was dropped from the test set after data pre-processing to avoid data leakage.
