Soil microorganisms are crucial for many soil processes, but abiotic factors, including reduced precipitation, affect microbial abundances and activity. Different farming systems profoundly affect the soil environment and may shape the response of microbial communities to drought. Using rainout-shelters, we reduced soil water contents in winter wheat fields cultivated according to standards of organic or conventional farming. We monitored soil water contents, microbial communities and final crop yields at three time points during the spring and summer growth period
