BACKGROUND: As identified by Dr. Christopher Chapman (senior curator at the National Portrait gallery) this documentary was a new work which ran in parallel to the On View performance (the live score previously submitted as a 2014 ERA output). Unlike the soundtrack previously composed for the screens and performers, this new commission project was an opportunitiy to write a suite of original material which explored the middle ground between arthouse dance video, and informative documentary. CONTRIBUTION: The work featured both new and archival work of famous Russian ballerina Dame Lucette Aldous interspersed with interviews and voice over. It also explored Professor Shirley McKechnie's ideas with both to camera and voice over material alongside more abstract presentations of choreography. The soundtrack used sound art and classical composition to traverse time and space, presenting, controlling and manipulating both zones of focus and reverie. Sound design was employed to control the levels of materialisation and dematerialisation of the image.The main experimentation in this work explored how a 'pre-loaded' sense of space in rich score (through instrumentation and spatialisation choices) can be used to gently unsettle a clear sense of space and time in the vision. http://performancespace.com.au/on-view-live-portraits-show-program/ SIGNIFICANCE Funded by Arts NSW, Australia Council, NSW Visual Arts & Craft strategy, Performing lines.
