It is currently well accepted in the Leishmania research community that sexual recombination events can occur between promastigotes in the insect vector; indeed, a recent paper in press provides strong evidence of L. donovani hybrids in the sand fly midgut, using drug resistant fluorescent strains. We present data in support of this theory by examining whole genome data from a strain of Leishmania infantum from which one isolate is suspected of being a hybrid of two closely related strains.
