The Rena Wynne Site, 32BI332, is located on an old terrace on the west
side of the Little Missouri River in the Little Missouri Badlands. A
stratigraphic column in which two paleosols were identified was sampled for
pollen and phytolith analysis at 5 cm intervals. This yielded a total of 13
pollen and 13 phytolith samples. The two paleosols correspond to pollen
samples 5, 6, and 9. A slab-lined hearth radiocarbon dated to 1370 + 165 BP
was excavated within 1 m of the soil column. The hearth, which was located
stratigraphically between the two paleosols, was intrusive into that level,
and the date is correlated with pollen sample 6 at the bottom of the
paleosol (Arleyn Simon, personal communication, October 6, 1983).
