"Mareale, Häuptling der Landschaften im Osten vom Berge, vor einem Pfeiler seines Hauses" ("Mareale, chief of the landscapes east of the mountain, in front of one of his house's columns"). The chief is wearing a plaid cloth and has a long, enlarged left earlobe. He is wearing a cap.; Cf. photo no. 287. -- The picture was probably taken by Johannes Schanz (1876-1963). He worked as a missionary of the Leipzig Mission in Moshi and Mamba from 1901 to 1910.
