The microbial communities of Spree river based on the V4-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene were studied across contrasting pollution gradients in the Spree river. Riverine water and sediments were collected monthly from July 2019 to July 2020 across seven sampling stations and a transect of more than 200 km (with the exception of March, April and May of 2020 ). Aims of this work were to understand the effect of acid mine drainage and eutrophication on the bacterial community composition of the Spree river and their role as bioindicators.
