To obtain vortex-resolving, dynamically consistent four-dimensional (4D) ocean state estimates for the Indo-Pacific region, a four-dimensional variational (4D-Var, adjoint) data assimilation system for this region in 2015 and 2016 was developed based on the GECCO system framework. The model outputs from this system are named the Two-Oceans-and-One-Sea Four-Dimensional Variational (Adjoint) State Estimate Dataset (TOOSSE). The model domain spans 28°S–42°N and 31°E–69°W, covering the mid-to-low latitude Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as the South China Sea and Indonesian Archipelago seas between them. The horizontal resolution is 1/6° × 1/6°, with 50 vertical layers, where the layer thickness gradually increases from 10 m near the sea surface to 450 m near the seafloor. The elemental fields of TOOSSE consist of ocean state fields and control variable field adjustments. The ocean state fields include sea surface height, temperature, salinity, zonal current velocity, meridional current velocity, and vertical current velocity. The control variable field adjustments include sea surface air temperature adjustment, sea surface specific humidity adjustment, sea surface zonal wind speed adjustment, sea surface meridional wind speed adjustment, net precipitation adjustment, downward longwave radiation adjustment, initial temperature adjustment, initial salinity adjustment, and background vertical diffusivity adjustment.
