Infection of oak leaves by the major fungal pathogen powdery mildew Microsphaera alphitoides reduces photosynthesis and carbon translocation. Pedunculate oak, Quercus robur is an abundant forest tree species. Like other oaks, it typically grows rhythmically, with alternating root flushes (RFs) and shoot flushes (SFs), and its fine roots are associated with beneficial ectomycorrhizal fungi. Using RNA sequencing we explored how oak source and sink leaves under RF and SF respond to powdery mildew in the absence and presence of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Piloderma croceum.
