Time: Tuesday, September 27, 2016. 3:25-4:35

Location: The study was conducted on York
University, Keele St. and York Blvd. at a Latitude and Longitude of 43.77,
-79.49, respectively.
Weather condition: Weather was partly cloudy
and sunlight was visible in some area in the woodlot and grassland. Temperature
was 23˚C and condition was dry.
Data column descriptions and variables:
Pan trap replicate= 20 plastic bowls with a diameter
of 14.5 cm and a depth of 5.5 cm were placed in woodlot and grassland
Bowl colour: Categorical and discrete variable which
shows the different colours of the bowls: yellow, blue or white.
Number of insects: Quantitative and categorical .Number
of insects in each bowl was visually recorded and show the total number it’s a
continuous variable
Taxonomic units per sample(rtus): Quantitative and
categorical. the number of different recognizable taxonomic units per pan trap
was visually recorded. Categorical variable; a discrete number of RTUs were
observed.
Rtus=recognizable taxonomic unit
Study site: Categorical variable and represents the
location of habitat used for this experiment. The options were grassland and
woodlot
Methods:
In Each habitat 10 solo plastic bowl were placed half filled
with soup water. Meaning 10 in grassland and 10 in woodlot .The order of
placement of bowl were four yellow, three white and three blue color each placed
by taking random number of steps away from each bowl. The number of steps was generated
using random function on calculator.
The pan traps were left for 70 minutes in each habitat.
After 70 minutes the number of species and rtus per sample was visually assessed
and counted. Then the data was transformed in the excel sheet.
Predictions:
It was predicted that the most number of insects and
taxonomic units will be presented in the lighter color bowl in yellow and then white
and less number of insects and taxonomic units in blue bowl.
Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that different
types of insects are attracted more to the brighter color flowers and plants especially in red
color spectrum. Flies eye notice the color yellow more because of its vision
development. Also Flowers and plants with brighter color might be more suitable
for insects in terms of nutrients for their survival.
