In 1982, the Arizona Department of Transportation awarded a contract to the Office of Cultural Resource Management at Arizona State University for a data recovery program in the northern resource zone (Rice and Most 1982). Funding was provided through the Federal Highway Administration as part of a project to mitigate the impacts associated with the construction of the Papago-Loop of the I-10 Interstate Freeway.
Our investigations were focused in the northern portion of the site in an area that was subsequently developed into a complex clover-leaf intersection. We also conducted excavations in a narrow, 30 meter wide corridor along the eastern edge of the right-of-way in anticipation of the construction of a drainage channel in that area. The study area of the Ciudad Project is compared to the locations of previous research in Figures 1.2 and 1.3.
