Survey data for the article: The opportunities and constraints of successful framing strategies

The survey (N=1000) was conducted on a nonprobability-based sample from a Hungarian 'Net panel' (NRC - https://nrc.hu/netpanel/ ) and was conducted online between 3 October and 11 October 2022. The sample was representative of the Hungarian population aged between 18 and 65 with internet access, as well as gender, age, education and place of residence censuses. For the experiment, participants were randomly divided into two groups (500-500 people), and each group rated four statements on a 5-point scale of how much they agreed with each statement. Each group was given one statement on each of the four predefined dimensions of judgement (security, economic interest, justification, and group identity). Both groups were given two pro-Atlantic and two pro-Russian statements to avoid acquiescence bias. The statements are meaningful dimensions of judgment on their own, but by aggregating them, we can uncover a deeper underlying attitude that is encircled by these preferences.<br> Research abstract <br> Framing and heresthetic are essential techniques for shaping public opinion in political communication. In the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, Hungary offers a fascinating case study due to the ambivalent and antagonistic political positions within the political elites and among citizens. The paper explores the opportunities and constraints of framing the Russo-Ukrainian war in different dimensions of judgments (security, economic interest, justification and group identity) through a public opinion survey experiment (N=1000). Our results suggest that a successful strategy is highly dependent on the framing dimension. The strategic framing of economic interests, security, and justification are highly effective dimensions, while in the identity dimension, opinions resisted framing. The results are discussed in terms of democratic theory, with a particular focus on the role of elite communication and the role of partisanship. Moreover, our results contribute to the explanation of the strategic manoeuvres and it’s followed electoral success of Viktor Orbán.
