TITLE - Mapping Party: mapping health assets in a socioeconomically deprived neighborhood in Barcelona.
ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the development and results of a mapping party in a socioeconomically deprived neighborhood in Barcelona.
Method: A descriptive study on a mapping party, a community-based technique used to create health asset maps. On a key day, the population was surveyed using an online form and a physical map to identify neighborhood health assets. The main variable was health assets, while secondary variables included sociodemographic characteristics, participation in organizations, and factors generating well-being and discomfort in the neighborhood. Quantitative data analysis was performed using counts and percentages, and qualitative data through expressed opinions.
Results: A total of 119 people participated, identifying 47 different health assets. The category with the most identified assets was sports and leisure, consistent across the entire sample (37.1%) and when analyzed by gender (women 28%, men 39%), age (15–34 years 40%, 35–64 years 27%, over 65 years 32%), and Roma ethnicity (39%). The most cited health assets were the La Mina Health Center and the Children’s Community Center (Casal Infantil). Key contributors to well-being included organizations, social networks, parks, and sports facilities, while insecurity, dirtiness, and incivility were identified as sources of discomfort.
Conclusions: The mapping party is a simple and cost-effective technique for identifying health assets perceived by the population, making it highly useful for creating a health asset map.
