The goal of universal screening, whole genome sequencing and analysis is what most tuberculosis (TB) control programs are geared towards especially detecting multi-drug resistant (MDR) cases; Our study aimed at understanding TB transmission dynamics in Ghana using whole genome sequence data. This included identifying recent TB transmission and deciphering the cause of recurring TB among individuals with multiple episodes of the disease. We have paved the way to call for more similar studies as it can identify geographical zones of highest need to support the national TB control program (NTP) with a targeted and guided approach to controlling TB. Case search approaches targeted at high risk areas may be more effective in TB control. Our findings do not only provide vital information to aid the NTP better manage the disease, but also provides directions for further research to understand the adaption of M. africanum to West Africa.
