Detection of potentially pathogenic beta-lactam-resistant bacteria in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and bats (Pteropus poliocephalus)

This study detected pathogenic bacteria which are resistant to amoxicillin (a beta-lactam antibiotic) in the faecal microbiome of wild koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and juvenile fruit bats in rehabilitation (grey headed flying fox, Pteropus poliocephalus). The study aimed to identify antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are capable of causing disease in wildlife, and determine if these bacteria are human clinical strains.
