Sweet cherry (Prunus avium) is an important and widely grown fruit. A phytoplasma disease, mainly manifesting as floral virescence and witches'-broom, can cause heavy losses in sweet cherry production. Although the disease has been proven to be associated with a phytoplasma closely related to 'Candidatus Phytoplasma ziziphi', little is known about the mechanism by which the symptoms arise. Little leaf is one of the main manifestations of witches'-broom. In this study, physiological and transcriptomic profiles of healthy and phytoplasma-infected leaves were analyzed to explore the formative mechanism of this symptom.
