The MLCK gene phosphorylates the regulatory light chain (RLC) of myosin, which increases force development during skeletal muscle contraction. It has been suggested that MLCK gene polymorphisms may alter RLC phosphorylation, thereby reducing the ability to produce force and resist tension during voluntary muscle contractions. Although measures are taken to reduce the risk of muscle injuries during training and competition, muscle injuries still occur in athletes. However, the frequency of muscle injuries in sports requiring high power production or long-time continuity shows individual differences.
