VPRS 19309 Laboratory Register of Analysis

This series is thought to record the results of chemical analyses and examinations of various geological samples collected by the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118). Samples were collected primarily within Victoria, however there are also some from interstate, as well as from expeditions to Antarctica. Samples were sent to the Head Office of the Mines Department (VA 612) with relevant correspondence identifying the field number assigned to the sample, the locality of collection, date, and any remarks – for example, if the specimen was to be assayed, analysed, or sliced. From Head Office they were forwarded on to be sliced or undergo examination and analysis by the Department laboratory. Various samples were also numbered and sent to the Geological Museum, operated by the Mines Department from 1909 until 1965, which housed a large collection of rocks and minerals from around Victoria for use in research and teaching. Some specimens were also added to the collections of the National Museum of Victoria (VA 431). Once received by the laboratory, details of the samples and results of analysis were recorded in the Laboratory Register of Analyses (this series). For the most part, multiple samples appear to have been sent at once, and entered into the Register together. Results of analysis are then displayed in a table, often recorded by more than one chemist. Information captured varied, but could include assay number, field mark, series letter, name of collector, locality, description of sample[s], and results of analysis with remarks made by the chemist. In some instances, there are references to related correspondence, assay reports and publications noted within the ‘description’ and where samples had been sent from the museum to be analysed, their museum number is also recorded.
