A total of 92 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The frequency of spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) was monitored using video monitoring 6 to 8 weeks after TLE induction. Spatial memory, anxiety, and aggression were assessed using the Morris water maze, open field, approach-response, touch-response, and pick-up tests. In order to evaluate brain atrophy and mossy fiber sprouting, rats were euthanized after behavioural testing and their brain sections were stained with Nissl or ZnT3. Apoptotic proteins were measured in the remainder of the brain tissues.
