US Army National Guard Cultural Resources and NAGPRA Status - Federally Owned and Federally Supported Facilities in the 50 United States and the District of Columbia

Between August 1997 and March 2000 personnel from the U.S. Army Engineer District, St. Louis located archaeological collections, conducted curation needs assessments for Army National Guard archaeological collections from across the United States and U.S. Territories, and conveyed the findings in three reports (1998 and 2000).

In 2006, the National Guard Bureau (NGB) tasked the St. Louis District with updating this information through telephone and electronic mail correspondence with Army National Guard (ARNG) cultural resources staff in each state (not including U.S. territories).

Information regarding the location, content, and extent of current archaeological collections was gathered, as well as information regarding the current status of NAGPRA compliance for each state.

In total, 882.57 cubic feet of artifacts and 90.23 linear feet of records are the responsibility of the state ARNG agencies, according to the ARNG cultural resources staff. In addition, seven states—Alaska, California, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Texas, and Utah—have experienced NAGPRA or NAGPRA-like incidences with the discovery of human skeletal remains and/or funerary objects. Some of these incidences have been resolved—Alaska, Missouri, and North Dakota—while the rest are awaiting resolution. The current report also conveys St. Louis District’s recommendations for future NGB cultural resources initiatives and strategies.
