Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue. Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue causes the chronic and disfiguring illness called yaws. The disease starts as a skin infection causing persistent ulcers and progresses to form tumor-like masses. This disease tends to infect children and is common in rural areas in Africa, Southeast Asia and equatorial South America. Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue str. SamoaD. This strain was isolated in Western Samoa in 1953 and will be used for comparative analysis.
