A Cross-Entropy Approach to the Estimation of Generalized Linear Multilevel Models
In this article, we use the cross-entropy method for noisy optimization for fitting generalized linear multilevel models through maximum likelihood. We propose specifications of the instrumental distributions for positive and bounded parameters that improve the computational performance. We also introduce a new stopping criterion, which has the advantage of being problem-independent. In a second step we find, by means of extensive Monte Carlo experiments, the most suitable values of the input parameters of the algorithm. Finally, we compare the method to the benchmark estimation technique based on numerical integration. The cross-entropy approach turns out to be preferable from both the statistical and the computational point of view. In the last part of the article, the method is used to model the probability of firm exits in the healthcare industry in Italy. Supplemental materials are available online.

Public Health Insurance Expansions and Non-Physician Providers: Evidence from Certified Nurse Midwives
This study considers whether the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid Expansions resulted in changes in the use of non-physician providers. Medicaid Expansions may have impacted both payments to providers as well as insurance availability for patients. Using U.S. birth certificate records, we analyze whether the ACA Medicaid expansions influenced the trade-off between physicians and certified nurse-midwives (CNMs/CMs) for obstetric care. Our findings indicate that the ACA Medicaid expansions led to an increase in the utilization of CNMs/CMs and a decrease in physician-reported deliveries. This shift from physicians to CNMs/CMs is particularly noticeable in states with Medicaid reimbursement parity for CNMs/CMs. These results suggest that health insurance expansions may increase the use of non-physician providers, but only in cases where non-physician providers are reimbursed similarly to physicians. Note that this project includes the code only as the data is restricted access.

2023 Naira Redesign Policy and Economic Hardship in Nigeria: A Study of Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State
This study examined the 2023 Naira redesign policy and economic hardship in Nigeria, using Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State as a focal point. The study aims to explore the consequences of the currency redesign policy on the local economy and the challenges faced by residents in Anambra State, by employing qualitative research methods such as questionnaires. The study seeks to identify the factors contributing to economic hardship and propose potential solution to alleviate the situation. The researcher raised two research question, using the population of 400 respondents, the survey research design was employed in carrying out the study and questionnaire and survey used as research instrument. The finding of this research will contribute to a broader understanding of how the implementation of new Naira policy brought economic hardship and impacted business negatively. In conclusion, the researcher among other recommendations advised that traders in the informal sector should open a functional bank account and acquire knowledge about transfers and internet banking, that the ban on old currency should not be enforced within a short period of time and that the federal government should put in place, all logistics needed for the printing and circulation of the new currency before enforcing the deadline on old Naira notes. This recommendation became very important in the wake of the present technological era where youths can just click on their phones and get connected.

Replication Data for: Evaluating the Impact of Florida's `Stand Your Ground' Self-defense Law on Homicide and Suicide by Firearm: An Interrupted Time Series Study
We replicate and extend the January 2017 study, \Evaluating the Impact of Florida's `Stand Your Ground' Self-defense Law on Homicide and Suicide by Firearm: An Interrupted Time Series Study" by David K. Humphreys, Antonio Gasparrini, and Douglas J. Wiebe, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). "Stand Your Ground" (SYG) laws removed the requirement to retreat rst before using lethal force to defend oneself if a person felt threatened. As SYG laws become increasingly popular in the US, scholars, elected officials and the public have debated the effects of these laws on crime and public health. The study by Humphreys et al (2017) provided much-needed evidence to support this discussion. (2018-05-16)

Based on the data of China’s listed companies from 2000 to 2022, this study investigates how company misconduct affect company survival risk through survival analysis. The research results show that company misconduct significantly increases company survival risk. After considering endogeneity issues and conducting robustness tests, this conclusion still holds. Mechanism analysis reveals that company misconduct significantly increases enterprise survival risk by reducing investor confidence and increasing corporate financing constraints. Further analysis considering company and regional heterogeneity, which shows that non-state-owned, small-scale, low equity concentration, and eastern region company face more severe survival risk after misconduct. The findings extend the research on the influencing factor of company survival, and provide new empirical evidence for revealing how corporate misconduct affect company survival risk.

Labour Force Survey Two-Quarter Longitudinal Dataset, April - September, 2014
For the fourth edition (August 2017) a new version of the data file, weighted to 2017 population figures, was deposited.

Background
The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a unique source of information using international definitions of employment and unemployment and economic inactivity, together with a wide range of related topics such as occupation, training, hours of work and personal characteristics of household members aged 16 years and over. It is used to inform social, economic and employment policy. The LFS was first conducted biennially from 1973-1983. Between 1984 and 1991 the survey was carried out annually and consisted of a quarterly survey conducted throughout the year and a 'boost' survey in the spring quarter (data were then collected seasonally). From 1992 quarterly data were made available, with a quarterly sample size approximately equivalent to that of the previous annual data. The survey then became known as the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS). From December 1994, data gathering for Northern Ireland moved to a full quarterly cycle to match the rest of the country, so the QLFS then covered the whole of the UK (though some additional annual Northern Ireland LFS datasets are also held at the UK Data Archive). Further information on the background to the QLFS may be found in the documentation.

Longitudinal data
The LFS retains each sample household for five consecutive quarters, with a fifth of the sample replaced each quarter. The main survey was designed to produce cross-sectional data, but the data on each individual have now been linked together to provide longitudinal information. The longitudinal data comprise two types of linked datasets, created using the weighting method to adjust for non-response bias. The two-quarter datasets link data from two consecutive waves, while the five-quarter datasets link across a whole year (for example January 2010 to March 2011 inclusive) and contain data from all five waves. A full series of longitudinal data has been produced, going back to winter 1992. Linking together records to create a longitudinal dimension can, for example, provide information on gross flows over time between different labour force categories (employed, unemployed and economically inactive). This will provide detail about people who have moved between the categories. Also, longitudinal information is useful in monitoring the effects of government policies and can be used to follow the subsequent activities and circumstances of people affected by specific policy initiatives, and to compare them with other groups in the population. There are however methodological problems which could distort the data resulting from this longitudinal linking. The ONS continues to research these issues and advises that the presentation of results should be carefully considered, and warnings should be included with outputs where necessary.

LFS Documentation
The documentation available from the Archive to accompany LFS datasets largely consists of the latest version of each user guide volume alongside the appropriate questionnaire for the year concerned. However, volumes are updated periodically by ONS, so users are advised to check the latest documents on the ONS Labour Force Survey - User Guidance pages before commencing analysis. This is especially important for users of older QLFS studies, where information and guidance in the user guide documents may have changed over time.

Additional data derived from the QLFS
The Archive also holds further QLFS series: End User Licence (EUL) quarterly data; Secure Access datasets; household datasets; quarterly, annual and ad hoc module datasets compiled for Eurostat; and some additional annual Northern Ireland datasets.

Variables DISEA and LNGLST
Dataset A08 (Labour market status of disabled people) which ONS suspended due to an apparent discontinuity between April to June 2017 and July to September 2017 is now available. As a result of this apparent discontinuity and the inconclusive investigations at this stage, comparisons should be made with caution between April to June 2017 and subsequent time periods. However users should note that the estimates are not seasonally adjusted, so some of the change between quarters could be due to seasonality. Further recommendations on historical comparisons of the estimates will be given in November 2018 when ONS are due to publish estimates for July to September 2018.

An article explaining the quality assurance investigations that have been conducted so far is available on the ONS Methodology webpage. Datasets and codes for manuscript "Development policy affects coastal risk in China more than sea-level rise"
Effective coastal risk assessments are crucial for adaptively managing threats from sea-level rise (SLR). Despite recent advancements, global and regional assessments remain limited by omitting critical factors like land-use change, oversimplifying land subsidence, and failing to disaggregate potential impacts across different land uses. This study addresses these gaps by developing context-specific scenarios based on a comprehensive analysis of Chinese coastal development policies. We integrate high-resolution simulations of population and land system changes with inundation exposure assessments that incorporate SLR, land subsidence, tides, and storm surges, offering a more nuanced understanding of coastal risks. Our findings reveal that transitioning from strict ecological protection to aggressive economic development policies significantly alters the land systems exposed to flooding. While SLR and subsidence affect flood hazard (inundation and depth), policy scenarios dictate exposure (and vulnerability) of land functions. The analysis sheds new light on who has agency for managing coastal risk.

Jamaica - Survey of Living Conditions 1991
The nationwide survey was implemented to establish baseline measures of household welfare and then to monitor the impact of Jamaica's Human Resources Development Program on health, education and nutrition. The JSLC differs from other LSMS surveys in its relatively narrow focus and greater emphasis on immediate policy impact. The JSLC is linked to the ongoing quarterly Labor Force Survey (LFS). The households are visited once for the standard LFS. Then a subset of households are revisited about a month later for the SLC. When the data sets are merged, the LFS serves as the employment module of the combined LFS/SLC. To avoid respondent fatigue, the JSLC household questionnaire is short enough so that it can be administered in one interview (as compared to two interviews in the typical LSMS survey). In general, each JSLC questionnaire has included modules on health, education, nutrition, consumption, and housing. On a rotating basis, designated topics have received additional emphasis. To date, expanded modules for Health, Poverty, Education, Housing, Consumption, Household Finances, Employment, Aging, and Coping Strategies have been carried out. The JSLC surveys contain no data on agricultural activities, non-agricultural household activities, or migration.
