Vessel-Mounted ADCP Ocean Velocity Data across a Section of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current – RV Polarstern PS133/1 (Oct 2022)

This dataset is a subset from the underway acoustic Dopler current profiler (ADCP) data during the scientific cruise PS133/1 Island Impact on RV Polarstern to the South Georgia region in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. The subset was compiled for fulfilling the data availability requirements of a manuscript submission. The full processed dataset of the underway current measurements will be published on PANGAEA (https://www.pangaea.de/?q=ps133%2F1) in due time. The data were collected using a 150 kHz Ocean Surveyor ADCP from Teledyne RDI (USA), mounted in the ship's hull at 11 m below the sea surface. The instrument was configured in narrowband mode and set up to use a 4 m bin size, covering a range from 19 m to about 200–300 m depending on sea state, ship speed, and backscatter intensity. This data subset covers 46 h and a depth to 335 m where available. The data were collected during a transit across several fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Data processing was done using the OSSI toolbox developed by GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel and included a correction of the misalignment angle (0.8686°) and amplitude factor (1.016912) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. An averaging interval of 60 seconds was used. The data provided here has variables u and v (eastward and northward velocity components), depth, and time, as well as lon (longitude) and lat (latitude).
